Who We are
A hearth is a place of warmth and comfort. In some ways, a hearth is structurally the opposite of a cathedral, whose cold walls enforce the plain and unambiguous barrier between who is in and who is out. Anybody who pretends to be too insider at a hearth is likely to get burned. So one can neither be inside nor outside. Each of us can only ever sit at some proximity to the flame. Maybe that’s why the scriptures of Christ followers compare the Holy Spirit to fire. Some choose to sit closer, some farther away—that depends, more than anything, on whatever the temperature was wherever they’ve come from.

It’s unsurprising that when the resurrected Jesus wants to meetup with the disciples, he doesn’t invite them to a religious building, of which he’d been kicked out of several, but instead, he invites them to sit around a fire. The pious meet in temples and churches. Friends sit around fires. We’d love for you to come join our friendship, whether you choose to sit up close or farther away.
Reconciling in christ congregation
Being a “Reconciling in Christ” congregation of the ELCA means that the Hearth openly and unambiguously affirms persons and couples of all sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions. The Hearth does not tolerate racism, prejudice, or discrimination of any kind.
Simply: we believe that people are people. And God loves people. |

We always do the things that Jesus specifically said his followers should do:
baptizing people (including the youngest) in water,
taking communion together,
& washing each other’s feet once a year
(yes, it’s a bit awkward and that’s kind of the point)
